Solar in Edmonds, Wa
Here we find ourselves in the southwest corner of Snohomish county in Edmonds, WA. Located just 15 miles north of Seattle, Edmonds is a community nestled up against the Puget Sound with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains.
As you can see in the picture above, this neighborhood in Edmonds brings those classic mid-century vibes with low pitched roofs and the not-so-standard roofing materials - not a problem for Blossom Solar, though. For this solar project, the customer selected a beautiful all black solar panel, the Solaria 400 with the Enphase IQ8A microinverters. This 38 panel, 15.2 kW system was sized to offset all of the customer’s annual kWh electricity usage. As with all systems, Blossom’s primary goal is to offset 100% of electricity usage while keeping a nice aesthetic. Blossom’s sales representatives will review a potential client’s annual usage and build a system to meet that annual need, and if requested, size the system up for future changes, like purchasing a new electric
car. Due to where we live, most of the energy generated through the solar panels will be on those long spring and summer days. Excess energy from the system is sent back to our customers’ utilities and the utility will bank that energy as a credit in a 1-to-1 ratio. So, for every unit of energy our customers send back to their utility, they receive a credit to be used later in the year when the sun isn’t out as much, like the winter.
This customer also paired an Enphase backup battery system with their solar panel system. Backup batteries are not a requirement when going solar, but they are if you want your solar to continue to generate energy for the home during an outage. Since solar panels backfeed excess energy to the utility, they need to shutoff during an outage (unless you have battery) so they don’t harm people working on downed lines.
While most customers place the backup batteries in their garage, the batteries are also rated to be placed outside near the meter and main service panel - for those who don’t have room in their garage or for those who don’t have a garage at all. This 10 kWh battery is set to backup the critical loads in the house during a power outage, keeping the essentials powered so they can go on with life while everything else slows down.
