Does solar work in Washington?
Yep, it sure does!
Ok. Yes, we’re not in California. California is great, but we love living in Washington.
We also love clean, renewable energy, saving money, and creating a bit of a barrier between us and rising energy costs.
That’s where solar comes in.
Ok, so how does solar work in Washington?
To understand more how solar works in general, check out How Does Solar Work? But to understand how solar is a viable option in Washington, there are two key features:
Long Summer Days
Net Metering
With the longer days in the summer, a solar system can really produce a lot of energy. We take those long days and leverage the Net Metering benefit. Net Metering is the program where excess energy is banked for future use. Washington state homeowners have the option to remain connected to the grid and they’re able to backfeed unused energy to their utility, where it is then credited to their account in a 1-to-1 ratio. So, we use those long summer days to bank credits and pay down electricity usage in the winter.
In effect, these factors, along with the 30% federal tax credit and no sales tax on solar, allow homeowners to lock in their energy rates, oftentimes at a cheaper per kWh cost than what they are currently paying, but for 25 years.
